The objective of this paper is to expose the theoretical core on which contemporary contractualism is based. The first part takes as its starting point the most representative authors of the modern natural law, a political, philosophical doctrine that incorporates the social contract as a criterion of the rationality of the liberal State. In the second part, we present the notion of "reflective equilibrium" of the liberal philosopher John Rawls, in which he tries to construct and propose a democratic method of rational choice, recovering the main reviews and criticisms of that proposal.>
